What Is a Whole-Home Repipe Project?

When Is Repiping Necessary?

If you live in a very old house or building, you might have experienced your fair share of leaks or pipe problems. Or perhaps something wrong went down the drain and now all of the pipes are corroding for no apparent reason. In both of these situations, you’re probably going to need to exchange all of the piping in your house. It might be time to repipe. Below is an explanation of what repiping is, why you might need it, and what you can do to prevent repiping in the future.

The Repiping Process

Whole-Home Repiping Tools
Repiping is a term used when you have to replace all of the pipes in a building or other structure. In order to get your house repiped, you’ll need to establish a schedule for plumbers to come over. With the designated time frame, plumbers will come over to start repiping your house. To do so, they will need to get into the framework area of your house, meaning they will bring in ladders and other materials commonly found at construction sites in order to get access to your piping.

The plumbers will then start installing a new piping system, in place of your old or damaged pipes. After the new piping system is complete, the plumbers will change over from the old system to the new. To do so, all of the water is shut off and any connections to the old system are severed and added on to the new system. The change over could take over a day. If this happens, the plumbers will usually make the necessary waterlines, like the shower, available that night, and then finish with the other parts the next day.

Why Do You Need Repiping?

Because repiping is rather extensive and expensive, most people avoid it. However, there are a few instances when repiping is absolutely necessary. Some of these issues include:

  • Old Age: If you live in a home over fifty years old that has never replaced the pipes, then you’ll need to do so because the types of pipes used are probably prone to bursting and the pipes are weaker, so you’re more likely to get leaks.
  • Water Pressure Issues: Homes with you have low water pressure is usually a result of rusting or mineral buildup in the pipes. You’ll need to get rid of the pipes to get rid of the buildup.
  • Discoloration: If the water coming out of your faucets is brown or red, this means that your pipes are rusting and getting into the water supply, which is not healthy. A repiping would be in order to make it safe to use your tap water.

Also, if you’ve been getting a lot of pipe leaks, it would be a good idea to get your house repiped.

Repipe Prevention Tips

Repipe Prevention Tips

Because nobody likes having to tiptoe around their house, it’s best to just prevent the need for a repipe altogether. A good way to prevent a need for repiping is to use a water softener. This will keep down the number of minerals in your water, so there can’t be a mineral build-up. Another tip is to clean the Septic tank often. Letting it get dirty can cause your pipes to get backed up. Also, if you live in a cold area, try to keep the pipes from freezing and bursting, which would definitely require a complete repiping.
